Episode 2, Ramadan 1444

Prophetic Inspiration for Sustainability & Eid Celebrations

In this episode of Islam & Earth in Ramadan 1444,  Sr. Kori Majeed, who founded the Green Ramadan Platform reminisces on her experiences of growing up on her grandmother's farm and her connection to food from the land.  Sr. Kori shares how she conceived Green Ramadan and has developed this project over the last decade.  She also speaks about Prophetic examples that move her towards sustainable practises and how spirituality guides a Muslim's consciousness of environmental issues.

This episode also explores how we can start thinking about the Earth as we approach Eid, inshaAllah.  As a celebration that celebrates the successful completion of 30 days of fasting, Eid is a time to reflect on our impact on the Earth.  She asks us to think about how Eid is a beautiful celebration and how do we exude the essence of beauty within the spaces we occupy when we celebrate Eid.

Sr. Kori challenges us with three simple acts that we can implement in our day-to-day lives as we move forward from Ramadan and commit to acts of goodness beyond Ramadan inshaAllah.
1. Use Reusables
2. Consume less meat
3. Make wudu like the Prophet (saw), and mindfully use water

Finally, Sr. Kori talks about the publication 40 Green Hadith which she co-authored, as she tried to understand the excellent example of the Prophet Muhammad(saw).  This collection of hadith provides insight on how Muhammad(saw) acted with the Earth, with water, with animals, and how he lived his life.  The free e-book provides practical suggestions and is now translated into Indonesian & Spanish.

Very appreciative of this inspiring conversation with Sr. Kori, Alhamdulillah.~~
Since 2013, Kori Majeed has used her Green Ramadan platform to encourage Muslims to eat mindfully and tread lightly by cultivating sustainable habits during Ramadan. These habits are based on Islamic teachings and principles that call humanity to give all of Allah’s creation their rights. Kori is a GreenFaith fellow, Master Naturalist-trainee, chair of the Green Team at Masjid Muhammad, the Nation’s Mosque, in Washington DC, and 2022 graduate in Islamic Studies from Bayan Islamic Graduate School.
