  • Maamawi Revisted

    Divest Waterloo and Faith & the Common Good are partnering with Terre Chartrand and Heather Majaury of Pins and Needles Fabric Company to present an evening of music and storytelling on December 8th at the Pavilion at Victoria Park at as the culmination of the Maamawi Revisited project.  

    When: Wed, 8 December 2021 (7:00 PM – 10:00 PM EST)

    Where: Victoria Park Pavilion, 80 Schneider Avenue, Kitchener, ON

    Maamawi is an Ojibway word meaning "bringing together" or just "together" as it applies to things that are alive water, plants, animals, birds and fish and humans.

    Maamawi Revisited has created opportunities for local emerging Indigenous artists to connect with the land, local knowledge keepers, musicians and mentors and with each other to grow and create together.

    December 8th will be evening of “bringing together” of storytelling and music that will feature Rene Meshake and musical performances by the artists who participated in this project.

    Rene Meshake is an Anishinaabe elder, residential school surviver, visual and performing artist, award-winning author, storyteller, flute player, and a Recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. He  shares his love of the Ojibwe language through his stories, poetry and spoken word performances.

    Tickets are required and are free, please register here space is limited to comply with COVID protocols. Donations will be accepted at the door to support Pins and Needles Fabric Company – an Intersectional Inter-Arts Collective in Waterloo Region - to provide programming for Indigenous youth.

    Join an online facilitated space to make connections, build community and find support with other MLSM Canada members living in Ontario.  When you register for a Roundtable you automatically become an MLSM Canada member if you are not already one. Learn more about MLSM Canada here… You can opt out at any time. To ensure time for everyone who wants to participate in person, registration will be limited and first come, first served. Facilitators will be Kathy Murtha and Karen Van Loon.

    Kathy Murtha

    Kathy Murtha is a Retreat Coordinator and Facilitator at the Mary Ward Centre, a ministry of the Loretto Sisters in Toronto, Canada. She has been facilitating retreats for adults and young people for over 25 years. Kathy has an MA in theology and specializes in interfaith workshops and dialogue, women's history and spirituality, and contemplative practices.

    Karen Van Loon

    Karen Van Loon is the coordinator of the Cultivating Care for Our Common Home program at Faith & the Common Good where she offers presentations, workshops and collaboration to Toronto Catholic parishes and groups. Karen previously served as the coordinator of Scarboro Missions’ Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Office which from 2007 to 2017 emphasized faith-based education and advocacy on climate change.
